Washington, D.C., September 7, 2015—The 2016 Pan American Deaf Volleyball Regional Qualifiers will be held June 29 to July 4, 2016 in Washington, D.C., U.S.A. This tournament, with men’s and women’s indoor volleyball teams from North, Central, and South America, will be hosted by USA Deaf Volleyball, a sport committee of the USA Deaf Sports Federation. It is a regional qualifying tournament for the 23rd Deaflympics, which will be held July 18-30, 2017 in Samsun, Turkey.
The Pan American Deaf Sports Organization (PANAMDES) announced their selection of the tournament site in late July 2015. The last Pan Am Games were held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil in November 2011. This will be the first Pan American event held in North America since a dual competition between the United States and Canada in 1980, ahead of the 1981 World Games for the Deaf (now Deaflympics).
The 2016 Pan American Deaf Volleyball Regional Qualifiers will be held on the campus of Gallaudet University, the world’s only liberal arts university for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. All matches will take place in the Gallaudet University Field House. Athletes, coaches, and team staff will be housed in Gallaudet residence halls. USA Deaf Volleyball, the meet organizer, is assembling a multidisciplinary corps of staff and volunteers to ensure the enjoyment, comfort, and safety of all participating nations, and of the thousands of spectators expected to attend the event.
The men’s and women’s matches will be live-streamed via the Internet. There will also be an active social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube feeds.
USA Deaf Volleyball also will host the third World Deaf Volleyball Championship from July 6-15, 2016, immediately after the Pan American competition.
